Hunting camera: technical aspects, uses and advice

Photo/video surveillance

Hunters, keep track of wild animals with a high-performance hunting camera. These innovative devices, also known as camera traps, allow you to observe game day and night. With advanced features like built-in WiFi and infrared for night vision, these cameras can capture clear, detailed images of nature. Whether you’re a professional hunter or a nature lover, a hunting camera is an indispensable tool for deepening your knowledge of wildlife.

What is a hunting camera?

A hunting camera, also known as a photographic trap, is a device for capturing outdoor shots in any area, whether difficult to access or not.
Hunting cameras are invaluable tools for your outdoor activities. They allow you to collect data on the population of a species, monitor territories or study the movements of game on a regular basis.

Connected hunting camera, solar, battery, WiFi connection, motion detector, invisible black LED… What are the features to consider?

There are many models of camera trap on the market. All of them allow you to capture animals in their natural environment, either photographically or on video. However, as with any camera, there are many features that differ from one model to another.
Overall, there are 4 main points to consider when comparing camera models:

  • The image sensor: What is its resolution? What image qualities are available? What are the differences in quality between photo and video? How many photos can be taken in bursts? How long can videos last?
  • Options for viewing photos and videos: Do you have a display screen directly on the camera? If so, how big is it? Can you view the images via a mobile application? Do you receive them by MMS or email using a WiFi connection or SIM card? Or are the images only stored on an SD card?
  • The PIR motion detection system: What is the range of the motion detector? What is the angle of detection? How quickly is the camera triggered when animal movement is detected?
  • Programming and remote control: Can you programme time slots for time lapse mode? What is the maximum number of time slots? Can you remotely control your camera trap? How much control do you have over your camera?

By answering these questions, you can refine your needs and the features you are looking for.

Which camera should you choose and buy for your outdoor activity?

To choose the right hunting camera, you need to consider the features listed above. Depending on the location you choose for the camera and the hunting territory you want to monitor, certain points will be more important than others, such as excellent recording quality or a wide enough angle of detection.

Choose the right camera for your needs and your purpose!

What camera do you need to film animals at night? Infrared or thermal?

To film animals in their natural environment, and more specifically at night when their movements are not hindered by the presence of humans, you need to use a suitable camera equipped with a night-time motion detector.

How does a night hunting camera work?

A night hunting camera uses 2 types of vision:

  • Infrared vision, which uses infrared LEDs to see in the dark,
  • Thermal vision, which detects heat sources in total darkness.

Thermal vision hunting cameras are better suited to tracking and monitoring animals.
